Why You Should Switch to Deodorant Today

Lawd I remember going through puberty. And when it came to my underarms I defaulted to the name brand “deodorant” that my mother used. Over time I learned that the stuff I wore wasn’t deodorant at all – it was an antiperspirant. The terms are used interchangeably but they’re not the same at all. Overall I’ve slowly incorporated a more natural lifestyle and it doesn’t stop at eating healthy and exercising. The things we put ON our skin matters as well since it’ll still be absorbed into our bodies. So I started using “all natural” deodorants.

I tried 3 different brands and here’s what happened…

Deodorant_All_NaturalNo fancy filters or trying to play it down. It was ugly. Seriously, my underarm looks like a rare steak. The dark patch was crusted skin that eventually shed days later in the shower when scrubbed. Surrounding that was tender and irritated skin. It itched like hell but I couldn’t scratch because it hurt. This was no fun. I was confused especially since I have no medical conditions or allergies.

But I kept looking! My best friend sent me a link to the Essentials Goddess online store and I decided to give it a try. After using her products for over 2 months I can say that this is the good stuff! I interviewed the owner of this black owned business who happens to be named Candace *insert huge grin*. Anyway she’s giving details on her products and choosing healthier alternatives for our bodies.

What’s the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant?
Antiperspirants have aluminum salt in it. It works by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with powerful astringents such as the aluminum salt so that you can’t release sweat. Your body should sweat its natural.

Deodorant works by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria. You will sweat more with deodorant because nothing is clogging and closing your pores.

What made you start Essentials Goddess?
I originally wanted to make a shampoo and conditioner for my natural hair. One day I stared mixing butters and oils for my daughter who had horrible eczema at the time. Then I began looking up other natural homemade products and making them for myself and people would ask “what do you have on” or “what’s this in your bathroom?” Things took off from there and I thought to myself: OK I can make extra cash while giving people natural products that are free of toxins.

If someone has been using antiperspirants for years with no issues, should they still switch to deodorant?
Yes, I believe they should. It’s always up to that person to decide if they care about their body and the long term effects that antiperspirants can have on their skin and body. There are so many bad ingredients in the things we use and eat. It’s like nothing is safe. By making my own homemade natural products I’m helping to reverse the underlying damages done over the years.  For my deodorant I use baking soda and arrow root powder which are really great at soaking up the wetness from sweating.

Is deodorant strong enough for dancers/athletes?
I’m not a dancer or athlete but I will say that from 5 AM until 10 PM I’m constantly on the go with work, daily activities, mommy duties, school and racing back home to start it all over again the next day. Still my deodorant is effective and the feedback that I receive from my customers is always great.
