Christmas Music Playlist

Eggnog? Check. Cozy blanket? Check. Now…what about some background music?

Yup, it’s that time of the year! You turn the radio on, you hear it. When you’re shopping, you hear it. It’ll likely get stuck in your head until early 2016. Good ole’ holiday music! Helene sparked this post idea and I couldn’t let it go.

Music is so powerful and as I’ve said before, it’s a huge part of my life and a piece of who I am. Seriously, I need to listen to music everyday. So let’s get into it! My top 8 Christmas songs for 2015. Who am I kidding? My top 8 for any year really.

Wham!: Last Christmas
This is a breakup song about a man who ran into the ex that broke his heart the Christmas prior. So why do I like it so much?! I listen to this song on repeat and never get sad!

Christina Aguilera: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
I remember when this album came out. I was so pressed. I listened to it constantly on my discman (90’s babies  have no idea). I was in middle school, BET still played music videos all day and I recorded them on VHS. Then I watched over and over again, trying to dance smooth like Christina and others. Fail. But I actually still have the physical CD! I’d show it to you, but you know – the move – it’s still packed away somewhere. Sad face.

Dru Hill: This Christmas
What’s good music without Dru Hill? Anything that they made or covered was pretty much perfection to my ears.

Boyz II Men: Let It Snow
Oh come on, you must know this one! This is that song that makes you want to cuddle with bae in front of the fireplace on the skinned rug. It’s mellow and smooth like that. Actually, all of Boyz II Men’s songs were mellow and smooth like that.

LeAnn Rimes: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
Because a girl always needs some country music in her life.

Bobby Helms: Jingle Bell Rock
#1: Because it subtly mixes rock into a classic Christmas song. #2: Because it was in the movie Home Alone 2. I rest my case.

Christina Aguilera: Angels We Have Heard on High
Just in case you didn’t get the message of how much I loved this album before. Good job Christina.

Pleasure Band: Santa Claus is Coming to Town
If you are from my hometown (DC/MD/VA) you DEFINITELY know this song, I need to say nothing more. If you aren’t from the DMV, this song genre is go-go. Go-go is a style of funk music with heavy drums and base that originated in Washington DC during the mid 1960’s, early 1970’s. A lot of the songs from this genre are covers of popular songs (like Santa Claus is Coming to Town, ha), usually with a slower tempo and a modified beat that promotes dancing. Popular go-go artists include the great and late Chuck Brown (The Godfather of Go-go) and Backyard Band. And this song right here is the certified Christmas song of the season. Turn it on in front of any DC native and you’ll see exactly what I mean. This has been your moment in black history with Candace McGee.

These are the songs that absolutely get me in that warm fuzzy holiday mood and I could listen to them again and again and again. And this holiday season, I probably will! Oh and of course I included them below for your listening pleasure.
