How to Resign from a Job Professionally

I know a lot of people on the hunt for better jobs or who have recently accepted new offers! Congratulations to you all!

For anyone still looking for a new position, based on research and my own personal experiences, this is one of the best times of the year to apply. Summer vacations are over and children are back in school. So the important decision makers of a company will be around for the hiring process. If you’re hoping to get into the federal government, their fiscal year ends on September 30th each year. Which means that they’ll be doing quite a bit of hiring for the last 3 months of the year.

Even if you don’t have a new job offer in hand, you may have a feeling that your time is coming! It’s not too early to start thinking of your resignation letter. Remember that these letters aren’t usually required, but of course you do still need to let your employer know if you’re planning to quit and when. You can do this verbally or through an email (I had to do this once because all of my superiors were out of the office). It’s really a personal preference, but I do suggest some kind of paper trail over the verbal option whether it’s a physical piece of paper or an email.

My clients are sometimes nervous about turning in a resignation letter and I always tell them that this isn’t personal, it’s business. There are two things that should be included and they’re very basic: the announcement that you’re leaving and when your last day will be. You don’t have to go into specifics unless you want to. Here’s a resignation letter that I turned in to one of my old managers. Continue Reading

Why You Should Switch to Deodorant Today

Lawd I remember going through puberty. And when it came to my underarms I defaulted to the name brand “deodorant” that my mother used. Over time I learned that the stuff I wore wasn’t deodorant at all – it was an antiperspirant. The terms are used interchangeably but they’re not the same at all. Overall I’ve slowly incorporated a more natural lifestyle and it doesn’t stop at eating healthy and exercising. The things we put ON our skin matters as well since it’ll still be absorbed into our bodies. So I started using “all natural” deodorants.

I tried 3 different brands and here’s what happened…

4 Ways to Boost Your Resume NOW!

Resume: A brief account of one’s professional or work experience and qualifications, often submitted with an employment application*

But really, a resume is so much more than that. For example, it can show your personality and it can show your grammar skills (or lack thereof if you aren’t careful). I did a post “6 Resume Mistakes to Avoid” and today I want to tell you some things that you should include, like, right now if you want your resume to instantly be better. Continue Reading

About Candace

About Candace!

Well hello there! I’m Candace McGee, the face behind every post you see here at TQL. I can mix up words on a page until I die. Then I’ll continue doing it in Heaven! OK – slightly dramatic, but that’s how passionate I am about writing. After a series of layoffs I decided to send my fears packing and rededicated myself to my true love – literature.

When a story is told, some people just hear it. I, on the other hand internalize it. Each aspect temporarily becomes a part of me. This is why I do what I do – because it’s who I am. I believe that words have the power to change your life! And this is why I choose to share my gift with you: to entertain, provoke, encourage, inspire and to help you grow your business.

When I’m not putting the pen to the pad these are things that I enjoy…

  • Pretending I can sing
  • Pretending I can rap
  • Cardio
  • Ice cream

A Bit More About Candace…

Even though I’m not a celebrity I like to pretend that I am sometimes so…interview!

  • Who are you?

A quirky girl since birth, I have been called “weird” all my life – as if it’s a bad thing. Growing up, instead of daydreaming about my wedding day, I played baseball outside and stumbled around the house “drunk” from Coca-Cola. Fortunately, I outgrew such things and tapped into real passions – reading and writing. These have been my best forms of self-expression for more than 20 years. From this passion, my freelance business and The Quirk Life were birthed.

  • What do you do?

Simplest explanation – I write and edit. I’ve worked for other companies and you know what I got? Layoff after layoff. I knew there was something else for me to do! 9-5 isn’t for me. So I made my own path. Outside of running this blog I’m a freelance writer and editor. I help individuals and companies communicate better. What an honor it is to do what I love! If you’re interested in working together or seeing my resume, email me. You can also go here for a list of my most requested services and here for more information on how I can help you.

  • Why’d you start blogging?

I talked about this briefly here. Basically I needed an outlet. Writing for other magazines and publications wasn’t enough. I needed to say what I wanted to say when I wanted to say it and I wanted to touch someone’s life in the process. I felt passionate about this!

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Adult answer: running my business full time with no huge debt and the freedom to travel as much as I want.
Not so adult answer: lbs heavier from eating pints of ice cream, with a book collection that I don’t have enough space for, owning a dog that can fetch the TV remote – you know, normal stuff.
