5 Things that Go Wrong When You’re Moving

Raise your hand if you enjoy the process of moving. Anyone? I didn’t think so!

Moving is SO stressful. The logistics of it all can override the joy of actually getting a new place to build memories in. Because no matter how hard you try, how much you plan everything out – something will go wrong. Trust me I know, I’m going through it right now. And this isn’t my first rodeo.

You’ll always have more stuff than you thought you had. And it gets frustrating believe me. Just when you think you packed away all the Christmas decorations, you’ll find a secret stash of them somewhere.

You’ll find things you thought were gone forever. A journal. An old necklace. For me, I kept finding old gummy bears buried underneath random things like my jewelry collection and my books. We shall not discuss how gummy bears got into such places.

Things won’t go according to the plan. You were supposed to be up at the crack of dawn and have the rental back by 7 PM. You wound up oversleeping and getting charged an extra day for the truck.

You’ll forget what you put in each box. Even if you label them. “Kitchen,” “Bedroom” – this isn’t good enough. You’ll just about have to itemize each box to know what’s inside.

You WILL need help. I remember thinking I could do it all on my own. “I don’t have that much stuff.” I was wrong. Sometimes a box was too heavy. Sometimes I was just tired. Other times I didn’t have enough space to fit everything in my car. At some point you will need a helping hand.

I’d advise that you start the process of moving with the understanding that original plans will change. Like I said last week, life happens. If you estimate that everything will take two days, just go ahead and plan for 3 days.

Even with all the things that might go wrong throughout the process…when all your stuff is in the new place and you exhale, it’ll all be worth it.

Do you have any moving tips? Would you gather friends to help or hire a moving service?

Until next time…

I feel like when you get to a certain age and economic status, you need to invest in professional movers – offering beer and pizza to your friends doesn’t cut it anymore.

Lol I agree! I’m starting from scratch – no furniture, no dishes, no hangers lol so my move was a lot less stressful than the average.

Moving is the worst. Well, I think unpacking is GREAT, but everything else about it is awful. Hopefully you’re settling into your new place a little more smoothly after the initial hiccups!

Hey Cass, thanks so much! I moved in yesterday and everything has gone surprisingly very smoothly. Not sure what I did to deserve that but I’m grateful! :-.)
